Wright prevails in all-Caltex Socceroos clash in Championship

Caltex Socceroos defender Bailey Wright has led Bristol City to a crucial win over Massimo Luongo’s QPR in the English Championship on Sunday morning (AEDT).

In a crucial result for City, both Aussies played the full 90 minutes but it was the promotion-chasing Robins that had too much class for Rangers.

And Bristol had to dig deep to take the three points after defender Nathan Baker was shown a straight red card with just under an hour still to play.

Famara Diédhiou marked his first start for three months with a goal before half-time before Joe Bryan added a second after the break to seal City’s first win of 2018.

Wright was superb at the back for the hosts, especially after Baker’s dismissal, as Bristol restricted QPR to only a handful of opportunities.

Luongo did go close 10 minutes after the break with a diving header, while his cross eight minutes from the end found the head of Nedam Onuoha but his effort went the wrong side of the post.

After going six league games without a win, Bristol have consolidated their spot in the top six with the win, while remain 16th and just eight points above the relegation zone.

City are next in action on Saturday (AEDT) when they take on Bolton Wanders at the Macron Stadium, while QPR host fellow strugglers Barnsley at Loftus Road.
