Bert van Marwijk has confirmed his 23-man squad for the FIFA World Cup which has seen a host of players earn headlines around the world.
Fresh off the 4-0 win over the Czech Republic on Friday night (AEST), van Marwijk finalised the players who will battle to take to the field in Russia against France, Denmark and Peru.
There’s also the final friendly against Hungary to look towards, with Tim Cahill and Mark Milligan now set to be involved in their fourth consecutive FIFA World Cup.
Cahill and Milligan will join a list of illustrious players, such as Pele, Bobby Charlton, Diego Maradona, Paolo Maldini, Miroslav Klose and Iker Casillas to appear at four FIFA World Cup.
Cahill’s inclusion in the squad made headlines on The BBC, with the UK national broadcaster also singling out the host of Aussies based in England and Scotland.
Massimo Luongo, James Meredith, Robbie Kruse and Tom Rogic all earned messages of congratulations from their clubs, while there was another Caltex Socceroo – Daniel Arzani – who made global headlines.
Arzani was singled out by the Daily Mail UK as one of seven youngsters to keep an eye on in Russia.
That was the expert opinion of former Celtic scout Neil McGuinness who identified now Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk.
McGuinness listed Arzani, 19, alongside Colombia midfielder Wilmar Barrios, South Korea attacker Hee-Chan Hwang, Russia midfielder Aleksandr Golovin, and Germany ace Timo Werner.
Mahmoud Abdel-Moneim of Egypt and Lucas Torreira of Uruguay were also highlighted by McGuinness in the feature, while Arzani was the youngest player on the list.
“A skilful player, very quick in his decision-making and capable of playing across either wing or even in behind the striker, he offers Australia something that they don't really have elsewhere in the squad,” wrote McGuinness.
“I would expect to see him getting some time off the bench in the last 10-15 minutes of games … and that could provide him a platform to flourish.”
