World Cup countdown - 90 days to go

To highlight 90 days to go until it all kicks off in Brazil, it could be easy just to refer to the number of minutes in a match, but for today’s interesting fact we look to one of the Socceroos’ Group Stage opponents.

It could be easy to refer to the number of minutes in a match being 90 days to go, but for today-s interesting fact we look to one of the Socceroos- Group opponents in Brazil - the Netherlands.

Back in the 1974 World Cup, incidentally the first time Australia had qualified for the tournament, Dutch midfielder John Neeskens scored the fastest ever goal in a World Cup Final. The time it took for Neeskens to find the back of the net - 90 seconds. Unfortunately for the Netherlands their joy did not last until the 90th minute as West Germany struck twice after Neesken-s early stunner to win the game and the Cup 2-1.

The Socceroos are scheduled to face the Netherlands in their second match of the Group Stage at the Estadio Beira-Rio in Porto Alegre on 18 June 2014 (Kick-Off 2.00am, 19 June 2014 AEDT).
