World Cup countdown - 87 days to go

He never got to play in a World Cup but 87 days to go until Brazil 2014 in the countdown is attributed to one of Australian football’s greatest servants.

He never got to play in a World Cup but Alex Tobin is one of Australian football-s greatest servants and today we attribute 87 days to go until Brazil 2014 with his 87 international appearances for the Socceroos.

A hard as nails, no nonsense defender, Tobin-s natural leadership qualities saw him take over captaincy of Australia's national team from the retiring Paul Wade.

In his 87-game decade long Socceroos career which began in 1988 and stretched until 1998 (although he also played three exhibition matches against the FIFA World Stars and Manchester United in 1999), Tobin scored two goals, against Taiwan and Kenya. This is on top of his decorated domestic playing career - his contribution and standing in Australian football recognised with the Professional Football Australia medal each year to a current or former player who demonstrates leadership, achievement as a player, commitment to fellow professionals, and service and dedication to the game, named in his honour.
