Wilkinson: Win would be 'perfect send-off for Mr Sydney'

Alex Wilkinson says Sydney FC will have an extra bit of motivation heading into their Grand Final clash against Perth Glory on Sunday, with club captain Alex Brosque due to line up for his last Hyundai A-League game for the Sky Blues. 

The 35-year-old Brosque, who has made more than 200 appearances for Sydney FC in all competitions, will officially hang up his boots after his side take on Kawasaki Frontale in next Tuesday's AFC Champions League dead rubber.

And central defender Wilkinson, who has played 27 Hyundai A-League games for the Sky Blues this season, believes a Grand Final winners' medal would provide the perfect send-off for the fan-favourite and club captain. 

“You couldn’t ask for more from him,” Wilkinson said. “It’s been well-documented what he’s done for this club: he’s the record appearance holder, record goalscorer and Mr. Sydney, really. 

“So for him to be able to still be involved into the last week of the season in his last year is a dream come true. 

To go one step further would be the perfect send-off for him and we’ll all be looking to do that, to send him off on the right note.”

The Sky Blues will approach their clash with some wind in their sails, having beaten Tony Popovic’s side twice already this season during the regular campaign. 

Perth have confidence of their own, though, having run away with the Hyundai A-League Premiership for the first time in their history, finishing eight points ahead of their rivals from the Harbour City. 

“They’ve had a fantastic year this year, hats off to Popa and their group for what’s been a fantastic season so far, they fully deserved to win the Premiers Plate,” Wilkinson said. 

“But the Finals Series is a completely different beast and one-off games are funny, anything can happen – we take confidence in the fact that we beat them over there, we managed to beat them over here [in Sydney] as well.”
