Why Sainsbury isn't keen on Cahill's iconic kit number

Tim Cahill's retirement from international football sparked an avalanche of tributes for the Caltex Socceroos' all-time top scorer.

The 38-year-old stepped away this week having left the lasting memory of him wheeling away to the corner flag for his trademark goal celebration.

Equally iconic is the number four kit Cahill has worn since 2005 and questions have now turned as to who might inherit his shirt.

Suggested on Twitter as the ideal candidate, defender Trent Sainsbury had a simple reason for why he's sticking with 20: logistics!

Cahill originally sported the number 10 and 12 shirts upon his introduction to the national team, donning the former at the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2005.

He settled into his regular number in a friendly against Jamaica later that year and wore it in the famous inter-confederation play-off win over Uruguay.

Australia's long-serving talisman retired with 107 caps, 50 goals and four FIFA World Cups to his credit.
