Westfield W-League: tight race for the title at halfway mark

With the Westfield W-League season at the halfway stage, the 2017/18 campaign is shaping as one of the tightest in the competition’s history.

There’s a logjam forming on the ladder, with six teams separated by just three points, setting up a thrilling climax to the regular season.

At the top, three sides are tied on twelve points with Perth Glory, Newcastle Jets and Brisbane  Roar all having won four and lost two of their first six games.

Glory currently leads the Jets on goal difference, setting up a blockbuster top-of-the-table clash this weekend.

What a mouth-watering prospect the game at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday night promises to be.

The Roar may sniff a chance to leapfrog both when they host Melbourne City on Sunday.

Defending champions City – winners of the last two Westfield W-League titles - themselves though are part of the chasing pack.

Patrick Kisnorbo’s side sit just two points behind the leading trio and perfectly-placed to launch another title tilt in the back-half of the campaign.

It’s worth remembering City came from fourth spot to win last season’s grand final.

After losing their opening three games, Sydney FC are the form side and are a solitary point further back after winning their last three matches.

Canberra United are also on nine points, but have lost their last two games.

While Melbourne Victory, Western Sydney Wanderers and Adelaide United have work to do, a couple of wins can see each side surge up the table.

It all points towards a thrilling second half of  the season with a host of clubs in contention for the finals and the championship.
