Westfield Matildas in Westfield W-League: Round 2 wrap

We're just over two weeks out from the Westfield Matildas' two-match series against China and competition for places in Alen Stajcic's squad is heating up.

Take a look at some of the national team stars who shone in Round 2 of the Westfield W-League.

LYDIA WILLIAMS

Back in for Melbourne City and straight back to keeping clean sheets in stunning style.

Australia’s number one showed the full range of her athleticism when she expertly tipped Jeon Ga-eul’s first half header over the bar on Friday.

Preserved the deadlock with another important save from the resultant corner and then helped keep out a late scramble to safeguard City’s derby win, which also featured Matildas Steph Catley and Kyah Simon.

SAM KERR

Somewhat overshadowed by a hat-trick from American team-mate Rachel Hill, Kerr was no less important to Perth Glory’s brilliant 4-1 win in Brisbane.

Her electric pace was instrumental in winning a second half penalty which the 24-year-old converted herself to give Glory a two-goal buffer.

KATRINA GORRY

Her bullet free-kick brought Brisbane Roar back into the game on Sunday as Glory goalkeeper Melissa Maizels could only tip the effort onto the crossbar, allowing Clare Polkinghorne to bundle in the equaliser.

The hosts were eventually outclassed but, following her opening-round goal against Sydney FC, it’s encouraging to see the forward-thinking midfielder impacting games.

LISA DE VANNA

Looked a creative force in a 70-minute debut for Sydney FC, which included setting up international team-mate Chloe Logarzo for a good second half chance.

However, the fierce competitor will hardly be satisfied with a 2-0 defeat in Newcastle that sees the Sky Blues slide to last.

Lisa De Vanna's first appearance for Sydney FC this season didn't go to plan.

LAURA ALLEWAY

Came within inches of snatching a point for Melbourne Victory on Friday night when Williams clawed her goal-bound header to safety.

The defender earlier produced an important block at the other end and played an important part in pushing City right to the end.
