Early onslaught sends Sydney FC to the top

Defending champions Sydney FC made it three wins from three to start the season, defeating Perth Glory 3-1 in a rematch of last season’s Grand Final.

All three of the Sky Blues’ goals come in the first 40 minutes, including a brace to Westfield Young Matildas attacker Remy Siemsen inside the first six minutes.

Caitlin Foord then added a third from the penalty spot – after Princess Ibini was fouled - for her second goal of the campaign.

While Sydney FC are still without Alanna Kennedy through injury, Chloe Logarzo was again superb in midfield for Ante Juric’s side.

City pounce early to overcome brave Reds

Melbourne City were aware they were going to be in for a tough challenge against Adelaide United and so it proved at John McEwan Reserve on Saturday.

They took an early lead through Kyah Simon, her first goal of the campaign, after excellent build-up play from Ellie Carpenter.

Playing in a more advanced role under Rado Vidosic, Steph Catley also almost got on the scoresheet for the hosts, while Emma Checker, Aivi Luik and Emily van Egmond also put in excellent shifts for City.

Goalkeeper Lydia Williams was rarely troubled for City as she kept her first clean sheet of the campaign.

It was a sensational displayer from shot-stopper Sarah Willacy which kept the Reds in the contest right until the end, while Mary Fowler was again Adelaide’s chief playmaker.

Roestbakken’s Canberra win a five-goal thriller

Norwegian star Elise Thorsnes made her first appearance of the campaign and it was her late strike which handed Canberra United an entertaining 3-2 win over Newcastle Jets.

United made a fast-start and led 2-0 in the opening half, with Westfield Matildas defender Karly Roestbakken playing a key role.

It was Roestbakken’s early shot which hit the crossbar and was then finished off be Ashlie Crofts for the visitors to take the lead at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Newcastle Jets defender Gema Simon had a tough tussle with the likes of Simone Charley and Thorsnes but performed excellently for the home side.

Brisbane undone by Hamilton’s hatty

Brisbane Roar fell to a second straight home defeat, this time going down 3-1 to a Kristen Hamilton-inspired Western Sydney Wanderers.

Westfield Matildas midfielder Tameka Yallop had a couple of early chances for Roar but each time was denied by Abby Smith.

MacKenzie Arnold was also busy in the Roar’s goal, making a couple of superb stops but there was nothing she could do to stop Hamilton’s first two goals from close range.

Katrina Gorry, Hayley Raso and Clare Polkinghorne also featured for Jake Goodship’s squad.

While it was American’s Hamilton and Lynn Williams who led the way for the Wanderers, Amy Harrison followed up her match-winning performance against the Jets with another excellent display in midfield.

And youngster Kyra Cooney-Cross is getting better every week, with her classy back-heel leading to Hamilton’s smashing third goal.
