Westfield Matildas’ NWSL wrap: Kerr scores first goal for Chicago

Westfield Matildas star Sam Kerr has scored her first goal for new club Chicago Red Stars in the National Women’s Soccer League on Monday morning (AEST).

In a top-f-the-table clash against North Carolina Courage, Kerr gave her side a 37th-minute lead when she chased a ball into the box, held off her defender and then finished into the far corner.

It was a superb bit of play from the Australian star but it only got her side a share of the points after McCall Zerboni equalised for the hosts eight minutes from time.

Kerr, the NWSL’s all-time leading scorer, will hope it’s the first of many goals for her new club since her off-season switch from Sky Blue FC.

The draw has seen the Red Stars drop to third spot on the ladder, leapfrogged by Steph Catley’s Seattle Reign, who won a five-goal thriller against Portland Thorns.

Catley played a full game for the Reign and set up the winner 15 minutes from time, scored by Rumi Utsugi.

After exchanging passes with Nahomi Kawasumi, the Westfield Matildas left-back played the ball to Utsugi whose effort from just outside the box beat Britt Eckerstrom to hand Seattle a 3-2 win.

For Portland, Ellie Carpenter and Lydia Williams were both unused subs.

Elsewhere, Katrina Gorry put in an excellent display in midfield as her Utah Royals beat the Washington Spirit 2-0.

While Kyah Simon got through 90 minutes for Houston Dash, as they prevailed 3-2 over Sky Blue FC.
