Brisbane started the stronger. An eight minute period in the first half saw Clare Polkinghorne open the scoring for the Roar with a bullet header. Emily Gielnik then doubled the visitors’ advantage from the penalty spot. The Brisbane side looked dangerous with the national team combination of Gielnik and Tameka Yallop looking threatening.

Alex Chidiac got the second half off to a perfect start for Melbourne City, pegging a goal back in the 46th minute.  A Sam Johnson penalty drew City level before a Mariel Hecher rocket secured all three points for Jake Goodship’s team.

Despite the score line, Teagan Micah was enormous in between the sticks, making a number of big saves to keep City in the game. In front of her, Emma Checker and Jenna McCormick started together for the first time this Westfield W-League season.

The two teams have both reached the halfway point of their seasons with Brisbane yet to taste defeat and City producing a mixed bag of results.

In the weekend’s other matches, Lisa De Vanna returned for Victory off the bench and instantly provided a spark. Her Victory side earned a 1-0 victory over Adelaide United courtesy of a Catherine Zimmerman goal.

Vicki Linton’s Canberra side has continued its winning ways with a 3-0 triumph over the Western Sydney Wanderers. Michelle Heyman’s quest to become the all-time leading Westfield W-League scorer is almost over. The striker now sits on 69 goals, only one behind Sam Kerr.

Sydney FC has also maintained its perfect start to the season, spoiling Tara Andrews’ 100th game celebrations with a 2-0 win. Cortnee Vine and Remy Siemsen found the back of the net in Manly.
