Westfield Matildas at Home: Emily Gielnik's halfway there

As the Westfield W-League inches ever closer to the finals series, fans were treated to another round filled with incredible goals and saves.

The story of the round belonged to Westfield Matildas cap 192, Larissa Crummer. Her goal was arguably the least impressive visually of Brisbane Roar’s four goal; a tap in inside the six yard box following a cross from Kaitlyn Torpey.

But what it lacked in stunning visuals it more than made up for in incredible narrative. Two years after Crummer broke her leg in a match for the Newcastle Jets against Adelaide United, she returned to a Westfield W-League pitch for the first time in 758 days. To mark the occasion with a goal was a wonderful bonus.

Before Crummer got in on the scoring, the order of the day was spectacular goals. Kiwi international Olivia Chance’s long range rocket opened the scoring. Before Emily Gielnik pulled out all kinds of tricks for goals two and three.

A chip from halfway reminiscent of Carli Lloyd’s 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final goal was too good for Lily Alfeld.

While goal three was a bullet shot from a tight angle across the goal. Gielnik now leads the golden boot race with eight goals, two ahead of Michelle Heyman and three ahead of Tara Andrews.

Perth Glory played their first matches since late January, losing 1-0 Western Sydney Wanderers via a Julie-Ann Russell goal. Before backing it up on Sunday with a 4-0 loss against the unbeaten Brisbane Roar.

In the round’s other matches, Sydney FC bounced back from their loss to Brisbane last week with a 2-1 victory over Adelaide United. Remy Siemsen and Cortnee Vine were the beneficiaries of pinpoint Teresa Polias crosses either side of half time.

A debut goal to Matilda McNamara made sure it was a tense finish up in Manly but Ante Juric’s side came away with all three points and remain on top of the table.

Meanwhile Melbourne Victory travelled to Newcastle and took home the win. A powerful Kayla Morrison header was set up by a Kyra Cooney-Cross free kick.
