Westfield Junior Matildas conclude first round qualifiers in style

The Westfield Junior Matildas wrapped up a dominant first round of AFC U-16 Women's Championship 2019 qualifying with a 7-0 win over Chinese Taipei on Sunday.

With 39 goals scored across four matches and none conceded, Rae Dower’s side finished first in Group D and move into the second round of qualifying in formidable nick.

Josie Morley led the charge in the opening half, slotting away a 45-minute hat-trick as she reaped the benefits of Australia’s dominance.

Georgia Beaumont continued her sensational form and added a fourth on the half time bell with a delightful lob from outside the box.

After a brief spell of Chinese Taipei possession in the second half, the Junior Matildas quickly reasserted their dominance after the hour mark.

Alana Jancevski struck a thundering effort from distance to get her name on the score-sheet once more, while a Chinese Taipei own goal and another effort from the Junior NTC attacker saw Australia finish seven goals to the good.

Junior Matildas coach Rae Dower reflected on a successful first stage of qualifying after the match.

“We’re delighted to have taken out first place in Group D and achieve our objective of advancing to the next stage of qualifiers for the 2020 FIFA Women’s U17 World Cup," she told www.matildas.com.au.

"With 39 goals for and none against, we played some very good football and scored some outstanding goals across the 4 matches and I couldn’t be prouder of their performances.

"There were many positive contributors to the success of the team with 10 different goal scorers and a stoic defence that didn’t concede any shots on target to our opponents.

"We only had a short time together in preparation for the tournament so all credit goes to the players and staff for coming together and navigating a challenging environment like Kyrgyzstan to travel to and perform in.

"We’ll make the long trek home tomorrow, rest up and look forward to the next round of qualification in February 2019. We know we will need to work hard and continue to improve if we want to achieve our next goal.”

The second round of AFC U-16 Women's Championship 2019 qualifying is scheduled for 23 February – 3 March 2019.
