'We haven’t changed anything from last year': Kantarovski's show of faith in misfiring Jets

It is only a matter of time before Newcastle Jets recapture the goal scoring swagger of last season, according to Ben Kantarovski.

The Novocastrians’ profligate start to the campaign cuts a frustrating contrast to their free-scoring antics of the 2017/18 Season, in which Ernie Merrick’s side were the league’s second-highest scorers.

Only Friday night’s rebel Female Football Round opponents Western Sydney Wanderers have mustered more shots on goal per game than the Jets in this campaign.

But Kantarovski is convinced the floodgates will open as long as the Jets stay true to their aggressive style.

I think we’ve been building on the way we finished last year, and the way we want to keep playing is that nice attacking, exciting football and we’ve been looking to get better at that,” he said.

“Although it hasn’t come yet, the performances have been there.

“The goals will come, we haven’t changed anything from last year.

“We’re going to keep doing what we did last year and that’s focusing on playing that real upbeat tempo, real fierce, in the face of the opponent and get more goals.”

Newcastle’s swashbuckling journey back to the Hyundai A-League summit last season saw the Hunter Valley club end their decade-long wait for a Grand Final berth.

And although the Jets reside on the foot of the ladder after four rounds of the new campaign, Kantarovski is adamant their entertaining brand of football will eventually reap rewards.

Last year we scored so many goals and it wasn’t by fluke,” he said.

“We worked really hard at making sure we got forward early and got in the box, got shots on target and that’s been the same this year. We’ve dominated most games we’ve played.

“Even I want to score now! It’s good we’ve got eleven goal scorers on the park because we had that last year and it’s really good to have in the team, you have that mentality that everyone wants to score.

“They say you have to be desperate in defence, but I think our thing is to be desperate in attack as well and making sure that we have players in the box to score.”
