WATCH: City squeeze past Olympic to seal Round of 16 berth

Melbourne City are through to the Australia Cup Round of 16 after edging out Newcastle Olympic 1-0 at No.2 Sportsground on Wednesday night.

A first senior goal from Luke Oresti proved decisive as City managed to overcome an Olympic side who pushed them all the way for their spot in the Round of 16.

City held 81% of possession in the first half and were rewarded for their dominance in the 41st minute  when Oresti was quickest to react and finish after Olympic goalkeeper Adam Pearce could only parry Jamie Maclaren’s initial effort.

Olympic forced their way back into the contest in the second half with the woodwork twice denying Joel Griffiths side an equaliser.

New signing Callum Talbot made his competitive debut for City although Dutch midfielder, Richard van der Venne was left behind in Melbourne after picking up a knock in training.

City join fellow A-League clubs, Brisbane Roar, Macarthur FC, Adelaide United and Sydney FC in the draw for the Round of 16.

Round of 32 action draws to a close on Wednesday night with four matches taking place, the round of 16 draw will take place following the conclusion of Wednesday’s games.
