Wanderers break winless streak with dominant win over Reds

Western Sydney Wanderers have broken through for their first win of the Westfield W-League 2018/19 Season after shocking Adelaide United 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Three second half goals at Marden Sports Complex sealed a deserved victory for the Wanderers as Adelaide simply couldn’t handle the onslaught from the visitors.

The Wanderers jumped out of the blocks and had something to show for it after only two minutes when Erica Halloway was fouled on the right flank.

Servet Uzunlar’s resulting free-kick flew into a cluster of players and Rachel Lowe rose highest to emphatically head home the opening goal for the visitors.

Western Sydney continued to lay siege to the Reds’ goal and the home side would have been alarmed at the ease with which their opposition was cutting through their defensive lines, Elizabeth Addo in particular coming close when she slammed a shot off the crossbar.

The Wanderers were left to rue their missed opportunities when Adelaide equalised just before the break, Veronica Latsko being put through before rounding the goalkeeper and sliding the ball into the back of the net.

Far from dismaying the Wanderers, the goal seemed to spur them into action once again and it only took 20 minutes for them to take the lead once again, this time from the spot.

Addo was brought down by a rash challenge from Dylan Holmes and Kylie Ledbrook made no mistake from the resulting penalty to restore the lead.

The Ghanaian should have wrapped up the three points shortly after but she took too long to fire off a shot despite cutting a swathe through red shirts in the box.

Reds custodian Sarah Willacy was then called into action and kept her side in the game with a fantastic one-handed save to deny Ledbrook from point-blank range.

Halloway would seal the historic victory just before injury time with a wonder strike from outside the box, leaving Willacy grasping at thin air.

Not finished, Addo grabbed her brace with seconds to spare, chipping Willacy from range to cap a memorable day for the Red and Blacks.
