Wanderers boss Heffernan drops exciting hint about overseas signings

Dean Heffernan’s mission to make Western Sydney Wanderers a competition force may soon receive a massive boost.

The 39-year-old Wanderers boss has been scouting pastures near and far as he prepares to break the club’s seven-season finals drought.

And his quest to break new ground for Western Sydney could be bolstered by the arrival of several international signings.

“I am very hopeful we will have some exciting news regarding a few signings from overseas...they are very good players and will add not just to the Wanderers, but to the competition as a whole,” Heffernan told the club website.

“We have been working hard for a good three to four months now and it seems it is now starting to heat up a bit.

"The phone calls and contacts we made earlier on are starting to come back to us. It’s getting close to the season so the players are very well aware of getting their futures sorted.”

Heffernan was appointed the club’s new head coach in April following the exit of Dan Barrett, man at the helm as Wanderers finished the 2018/19 season bottom of the pile with just one win to their name.

The former Hyundai A-League defender – who made nine league appearances for the Wanderers in 2013/14 – has worked tirelessly in the off-season to ensure Western Sydney are a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming campaign.

“We are really happy with where we are at. We have watched the majority of the NPL this season and feel like we have the best couple of players out of there,” he said.

“We have watched a lot of the future Matildas and the under 19s and we definitely feel we have the best players from that as well. It is the same with the players we have retained from last year.

“Things are falling into place nicely.

“There is a big push for sure. The fact is, it is the Wanderers and the expectation when you put on the Red & Black jersey is that you perform and win things.

“The club has to challenge for things and always be involved in the big games at the end of the season. But, expectations alone are not enough, there has to be more.”
