Newcastle Jets v Perth Glory Saturday 9 November 2013 Wanderers Field Local kick-off: 3pm

Perth make the long trip across the continent with high ambitions after last year-s breakthrough showing. The Glory made the finals for the first time and were a penalty shoot-out away from passage to the season decider. While Jamie Harnwell-s charges have lost the x-factor provided by forward Lisa De Vanna, they have recruited a trio of well-regarded imports in Chantel Jones (USA), Cecilie Sandvej (Denmark) and striker Christina Julien (Canada). Missing from the midfielder this weekend are last season-s club player of the year Aivi Luik and Ella Mastrantonio. With high hopes for the season, the Glory will be eyeing all three points despite the challenging and lengthy away trip.

With a low key roster and a number of key departures Newcastle, by self-admission are treating this as “a development-type season”. Gone is national team midfield ace Emily van Egmond, and last year-s three American imports. It is a big hole to fill and, bar one or two exceptions, local youngsters have filled the gaps. Some experience has arrived in the shape of former Brisbane Roar trio Hannah Beard, Lauren Brown and Ashley Spina, but debutant coach Peter McGuiness will be expecting a tough season ahead.
