Vargas among six released by Newcastle Jets

Marquee midfielder Ronald Vargas and experienced full-back Daniel Georgievski are among six players released in Newcastle Jets' end-of-season clear-out.

The pair have not been offered contract extensions and join Brazilian attacker Jair, homegrown utility Nick Cowburn, youngster Jake Adelson and mid-season recruit Kwabena Appiah in leaving the club.

Newcastle confirmed the departures in the wake of a disappointing Hyundai A-League campaign.

Ernie Merrick's men failed to repeat the thrilling heights of last season's run to the Grand Final as a seventh-placed finish cost them a shot at returning to the big stage.

"Each of these players have been model professionals, great characters, and made a positive contribution to this club during their time here," Merrick said.

"I'd like to thank them for their efforts and on behalf of everyone at the Jets, wish them the very best for the next step in their careers."

Venezuelan playmaker Vargas is the biggest name to be shown the door.

The 32-year-old former Anderlecht player showed glimpses of his prodigious ability across two injury-hit seasons, netting seven goals in 23 appearances in all competitions this term.

Georgievski featured in the Grand Final defeat to Melbourne Victory and appeared 42 times in total in the Hyundai A-League, while Jair leaves with just two goals to his name.

Newcastle-born Cowburn enjoyed the longest stint with the club, having made his professional debut for the Hunter outfit in 2014.
