Here we are again. The Caltex Socceroos are just one home-and-away tie away from qualifying for a FIFA World Cup.
Beat Central American nation Honduras over two legs later this month and Australia will be off to play football’s very best at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
It’s a scenario that invokes memories of that incredible night back in 2005, when the Caltex Socceroos won a dramatic penalty shootout against Uruguay to end 32 years of World Cup hurt.
More than 83,000 fans crammed into Stadium Australia, making for a heaving and hostile atmosphere.
Ask any of the players in a green and gold shirt on that night and they will tell you the home support played a major part in Australia’s victory.
And on November 15 – almost 12 years to the day from that famous night against Uruguay – the Caltex Socceroos need Australia’s support again.
Make no mistake, this game is just as big.
It’s why the supporters – like Caltex Socceroos super fan Blayne Treadgold – will have a huge role to play and need to be there.
"It’s absolutely important that Aussie fans get out and support the Socceroos,” Treadgold said.
“If Australia wants to start playing on the world stage with the big boys, it's time to work together to create a true supporter mentality and a positive fan culture around the national team, like the big boys do.
"It's all or nothing for the Socceroos now against Honduras, and you can guarantee that the Honduran fans won't be sitting down clapping politely in San Pedro Sula...neither should we.
"We saw in 2005 against Uruguay, how an intimidating Aussie atmosphere can upset an opposition.
“We almost saw fear in the eyes of world-class players like Alvaro Recoba during the national anthems...this is Uruguay 2.0."
