‘That’s what hypes me up’: Le Fondre vows to better last season’s haul

Goal hungry Adam Le Fondre has declared the Hyundai A-League Golden Boot is one of his targets this season as he chases back-to-back titles with Sydney FC.

The Englishman enjoyed a prolific debut season with the Sky Blues, scoring 16 times [during the regular season] in the Hyundai A-League on the way to the Championship.

While it was an impressive tally in his first year in Australia, it wasn’t enough to be the league’s top-scorer as Wellington’s Roy Krishna scored 18 goals.

But fresh from his brace in the Sky Blues’ season-opening 3-2 in over Adelaide United, Le Fondre wants to surpass his tally from last season and be the league’s Golden Boot.

“As a player you can’t just rest saying last season was a good season, I want to go better than that and for me, that’s the type of thing that hypes me up,” he told the club’s official website.

“I know the league now and I’ve changed what I needed to change in the pre-season.

“I’ve come back fitter, stronger and I’m looking forward to improving my performances this season compared to last season.”

Another thing working in Le Fondre’s favour is some quality creative players behind him.

Already blessed with the likes of Brandon O’Neill and Milos Ninkovic in the Sydney FC squad, the club has recruited impressively in the off-season.

Luke Brattan and Alexander Baumjohann have added some class in the midfield, while Le Fondre is already forming an exciting partnership Kosta Barbarouses.

“We’re [Barbarouses] starting to link well up top and I think we’ve got a good relationship going already,” Le Fondre said.

“We seem to know each other’s movements and that’s where the goals come from.

“There was a few times in the match where I would set him up and he would set me up and it seems to be working really well so far.”

Steve Corica’s side will play their first home game of the new season against Wellington Phoenix at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday.
