‘We’ll see them in the Semi Finals’: Logarzo eyes revenge after City hand Sky Blues reality check

Chloe Logarzo says Sydney FC will go back to the drawing board to get ready to match the ‘amazing’ standard of Melbourne City in time for the Westfield W-League Finals Series.

The Sky Blues’ undefeated run to start the 2019/20 Westfield W-League campaign came to an end when Melbourne City took maximum points in a 2-1 win at Cromer Park on Sunday afternoon.

Logarzo was brutally frank in her assessment of her side’s performance after the game, saying Sydney’s season has begun in far less convincing fashion than the table might show, leaving plenty of room for improvement should they meet with City again in the Finals Series.

“It’s extremely disappointing,” Logarzo told FOX Sports after the loss.

“We definitely have a lot to work on.

“We were lucky in the first three games. We played really well but we need to get more composure on the ball, and be able to keep it.

“We played undeniably the best team in the league and that was an amazing performance by them.

“They put us on trial and I think we definitely need to go back to the drawing board.

“It’s a formation that works well for them, they’ve got some quality players.

“We only play them once, so we’ll see them in the Semi Finals.”

Melbourne City
Melbourne City are setting the benchmark in the Westfield W-League this season

City are slowly clicking into gear after dropping points against Newcastle in Round 1 and look to be shaping as an early candidate worthy of taking out some silverware this season.

There’s a lot of football to be played between now and then, of course, and City forward Kyah Simon says her side are on an upwards trajectory after finding their feet in the 2019/20 campaign.

“I think we showed parts of our potential collectively,” Simon told FOX Sports.

“I think what’s been letting us down is our final third combination play and I guess that execution, and banging two goals away against a quality Sydney FC side, I can be proud of my team.

“Sydney came out fresh out of the gates and had us really under the cosh in that second half.

“I think it was a matter of us staying patient, possessing the ball like we know we can and executing.

“We did that to take a little bit of the pressure off us, and we were able to hold on the result till the end.”

As her side continue to gel and gain confidence as the weeks go by Simon is experiencing a similar progression on a personal level as she looks to put a horrid run of injuries behind her.

Simon is enjoying a steady progression in her workload, playing a bigger role in her team’s efforts week by week. After scoring her first goal of the season in Round 3 and playing 80 minutes against the Sky Blues, the striker says she’s feeling the confidence flowing back into her body and her game.

“It’s definitely been a tough road for me to get back to playing and injury free,” Simon said.

“I couldn’t be happier to get 45, 60 and then 80 [minutes] today under my belt.

“If I can keep building on that and get a few 90 minute [games] in the next few weeks I'll be super stoked, but just super happy to be injury free and playing football again.”
