Sydney FC have mental edge over Wanderers: Wilkinson

Sydney FC stalwart Alex Wilkinson believes his side have the mental edge over Western Sydney Wanderers ahead of this weekend’s Sydney Derby clash.

The Sky Blues have lost just one of their last 14 fixtures against the Wanderers and underlined their formidable run of Derby results with a 3-0 triumph in the FFA Cup 2018 Semi Final earlier this month.

Wilkinson says his side will be entering Saturday night’s clash at the Sydney Cricket Ground supremely confident of extending their cross-city superiority.

“Obviously, the belief when we come up against the Wanderers is very good because of the record we’ve got.

“That gives us a little bit of a mental edge there I suppose and after beating them a couple of weeks ago we’ll go into the game very, very confident.

I think that it just comes down to the squad we’ve got, and the players we’ve got and the coaching staff and making sure we’re prepared.

“It’s not a magic formula just against them, I think the last two seasons we’ve been quite good against a lot of teams, it’s just a matter of continuing that."

The 20th Sydney Derby will be the first football match played at the SCG in more than 30 years.

And after firing three past the Red and Black in the FFA Cup 2018 Semi Final on October 6, Wilkinson and the Sky Blues are hoping to hit their rivals for six.

“We’re looking forward to being at the SCG,” he continued.

“We had a run there last week and the pitch is beautiful - it’s fantastic.

“It’s a little bit of a historic occasion and what better way to do it than a Derby. It’s going to be a great atmosphere. Hopefully we get a huge crowd in for our first home game.”
