Stats Preview: Mariners out to end 16-game winless run against the Roar

Central Coast Mariners head into Round 16 in desperate need of a win against Brisbane Roar to stay in touch with the top six, but there’s a problem for Alen Stajcic’s side: they haven’t beaten the Roar since 2014.

The Mariners have lost 12 and drawn four of their last 16 encounters with Brisbane who they will host at Central Coast Stadium on Saturday afternoon (5:00pm AEDT).

Since their Round 11 bye the Roar have been one of the form sides of the competition, drawing twice and winning twice on a four-game stretch leading into Round 16.

Robbie Fowler’s side will be chasing a second consecutive away win; a feat they haven’t accomplished in the Hyundai A-League since March 2018.

A win for the Mariners would not only snap their 16-game winless streak against the Roar but bring them level with their opponents on the Hyundai A-League table on 16 points and within striking distance of the top six.

Sydney FC approach Big Blue with form on their side

Sydney FC will be licking their lips at the prospect of facing Melbourne Victory again this weekend.

The Sky Blues have won 10 out of their last 13 encounters with Victory, including a crushing 6-1 win in the 2018/19 Hyundai A-League finals series.

But Melbourne will be encouraged by their recent form at AAMI Park; their undefeated in their last seven games at the venue (W5, D2), and they’ve only lost once to Sydney in the past seven Big Blues which have been played at the venue where the two sides meet on Friday night (7:30pm AEDT).

The Victory and Sky Blues have both scored six goals within the first 15 minutes of games so far this season – the equal most of any sides in the Hyundai A-League – so watch out for a fast start in this blockbuster fixture.

Glory seek to continue AAMI Park dominance over City

Perth Glory are out to extend their six-game winning streak to seven against Melbourne City at AAMI Park on Saturday night (7:30pm AEDT), and will take plenty of confidence from their recent fixtures against City on their travels.

Glory are undefeated in seven fixtures against City at AAMI Park (W4, D3).

The most recent result in that run – a commanding 3-0 win in Round 9 – was the first win of Glory’s record breaking six-game win streak which they bring into this weekend’s clash.

A seventh win on the trot would be the longest Hyundai A-League winning streak of any side since Sydney FC achieved the same feat in December 2017.

City approach the game in second place just two points ahead of Perth having played one more game than the Premiers, meaning a loss would give the Glory a commanding grip on second place leading into the second half of the season.

Western, Reds prepare for maiden Hyundai A-League encounter

It’s taken them until Round 16, but after their clash with Adelaide United this Sunday afternoon (6:00pm AEDT) Western United will have finally faced every side in the Hyundai A-League.

In an afternoon of firsts, the inaugural fixture between the two sides will be played at Whitten Oval in Footscray, the first ever Hyundai A-League game to be played at the venue.

The Reds approach the clash on a horror run of away form having lost five of their last seven games on the road, including their last three on the bounce.

If Adelaide hope to put the mockers on their poor away form they will need to address their tendency to make defensive errors; they’ve eight mistakes leading to shots and four leading to goals so far this season, more than any other team in either category.

Wellington primed to bounce back against misfiring Jets

Wellington Phoenix’s impressive nine-game unbeaten streak came to an end when they lost to the Roar last weekend, but their home record against Newcastle Jets will have Ufuk Talay’s side sniffing an instant return to form.

The Phoenix have lost just two of their last nine games against the Jets at Sky Stadium (W5, D2), the venue where the sides meet on Friday afternoon (5:15pm AEDT).

The Jets approach the contest in last position on the Hyundai A-League table with just two wins to their name, and their inaccuracy in front of goal has not helped their cause at all so far this season.

The Jets have scored just 12 goals this season – a league-low – but their Expected Goals (xG) figures show they should have scored 22; the 10-goal difference between their goals scored and xG is the biggest discrepancy in the league.

The Phoenix currently sit in fourth position and will stay in touch of Melbourne City and Perth Glory with a win on Friday night.
