Stat Attack: The numbers behind Rogic's stellar season in Scotland

Tom Rogic has been in stellar form for club and country as of late, with the metrics proving why this could well turn out to be his best Scottish Premiership season yet.

Following his Player of the Match performance against Vietnam - which included a goal and assist for in the 4-0 trouncing - Rogic returned ferociously to Celtic, netting another two goals in a win against Motherwell to keep Celtic top of the Scottish league.

Rogic has been composed in build-up and clinical in the final third for The Bhoys under fellow Australian Ange Postecoglou, having scored five goals and setting up a further six this campaign.

Only James Tavernier (11) has provided more assists in the Scottish Premiership this season (all statistics at the time of writing), with Rogic flourishing as one of the two advanced midfielders in Postecoglou’s side.

Rogic has played 59 passes into the penalty area over the course of the campaign and has created 34 chances in total for his side.

But it hasn’t just been his proficient passing that has got Celtic fans on their feet, but his delightful dribbling and ability to carry the ball forwards and into space to gain territory for his team has also stood out.

Only Socceroos teammate Martin Boyle (53) has completed more dribbles in the Scottish Premiership this season, with Rogic having succeeded in 41 of his 69 attempted.

The attacking midfielder’s strength has been mixing end product with his flair and ball-carrying ability, and no player in the league has gained more assist ending carries than the Australian midfielders’ three this campaign.

Meanwhile, Rogic has also created 17 chances from his carries, once more the most of anyone in the league, and has also taken 11 shots off his dazzling dribbles.

Goals have been coming thick and fast for Celtic - the top scorers of the season - and Rogic hasn’t been an exception, with the midfielder scoring five from an expected of 4.95.

Rogic has taken 43 total shots while his movement has also been impressive - he’s made 93 touches in the opposition box, highlighting Celtic’s fluid positional rotations which the Socceroo has flourished within.

The change in style of play has articulated the Australian's qualities in Rogic's resurgence this season.

In a direct comparison to last campaign, Rogic has played more minutes (1,203), scored more goals (5), provided more assists (6), created more scoring chances (34), had more shots (43) and won possession more times (71) in this season compared to 2020/21.

Meanwhile, he's on a career-high with Celtic, having scored more goals (5), created more scoring chances (34), played more passes into the box (59) and had more touches in the opposition box (93) in the 2021/22 Scottish Premiership than in any of his previous three seasons in the competition.

With Celtic currently top of the table in the Scottish league, Rogic looks set to be influential over the last stage of the season, with his form at times a difference-maker for The Bhoys.

That influence could be pressurised in the Socceroos’ do or die tie against Japan on the 24th of March, where the Green and Gold require a win to sustain momentum for auto qualification.

But for now, it’s Celtic fans who have the privilege of watching Rogic’s entertaining dribbling and end product in action, with the Socceroo’s side hoping to secure their second trophy of the campaign.
