Stadium Australia sets a positive scene for Socceroos

History beckons for the Qantas Socceroos and the venue set to host a hopefully historic occasion is a positively familiar one for players and fans alike.

Sydney's Stadium Australia was where the Qantas Socceroos sealed their passage to Germany seven years ago and it will be here again where Australia will hope to witness another unforgettable evening on Tuesday.

"We haven't sat down as a group or anything like that but I just think it's in the back of people's heads (playing at Stadium Australia)," said midfielder Mile Jedinak.

"We all know that we've had some great results there over the years and I think we're going to be buoyed on by a home crowd which is going to be right behind us.

"I think knowing that in itself is a real positive for us and the boys are going to look forward to putting on a nice show for everyone."

The Qantas Socceroos' recent home record is an imposing one.

Under coach Holger Osieck Australia has not suffered a defeat on home soil - their last loss being during Pim Verbeek's reign when an understrength line up went down 1-0 to Kuwait in Canberra in March 2009.

At Stadium Australia, the omens are equally positive.

In 2009 - at the showpiece venue of the 2000 Olympic Games - Australia moved within inches of their qualification for South Africa with a 2-0 triumph over Uzbekistan, four years on from their unforgettable win over Uruguay that sealed their first FIFA World Cup qualification in 32 years.

For good measure, on Iraq's previous - and only - visit to Stadium Australia in 2005, the Qantas Socceroos prevailed 2-1.

"I think everybody knows a little bit what's at stake," said attacking lynchpin Brett Holman.

"A few of the older boys - straight after the game in Melbourne - said to everybody, we've got one week of hard work and one more game.

"Everybody stay cool and just focus on this week and get the job done.

"We know what we have to do and I think the last two games have shown how well we're doing at the moment.

"That gives us a lot of confidence, and it shows."

The Qantas Socceroos- FIFA World Cup fate will be decided when they host Iraq at Sydney-s Stadium Australia on Tuesday, 18 June. Kick off is at 7.30pm AEST.
