Socceroos training session: day 6 report

The Socceroos braved hot conditions in Melbourne to train at an earlier time with the entire squad put through the session – though skipper Mile Jedinak had a very light session away from the main group.

The session began with coach Ange Postecoglou addressing the players as a group.

Jedinak then did a light walk around the pitch with a trainer as the remaining 22 players got to work.

After the warm-up around the pitch taken by the players themselves, the squad was put through a more rigorous warm-up featuring short, sharp passing.

The keepers then separated to work on their own. Ryan, Langerak and Galekovic began their keeper session focussing on distribution with their feet, passing the ball across the penalty box.

The main group then split into two groups to work on a more intense passing drill again with the emphasis on movement.

Both assistant coaches worked with each group as Postecoglou monitored both sets of players.

After about 10 minutes both groups were again split into two for the most intense part of the session.

The group working with Peter Cklamovski on the side closest to the media worked in a small area playing 3 v 7.

The aim was to find a penetrating pass out of a tight area and score into a mini goal.

The "free zone" was one half of the pitch with the overload in the other half.

Passive defending was the instruction during these mini games of around 2-3 minute sets with a quick changeover of personnel.

“Penetrating pass, angles, bounce, bounce, bounce, suck ‘em in then forward,” yelled the trainer.

After around 20 minutes this was over and the warm down began.

An interested onlooker was Perth Glory coach Kenny Lowe who was watching the session with a member of Melbourne Victory’s coaching staff.

A number of fans also turned up as excitement builds ahead of the first game.
