Socceroos training session: day 3 report

A larger group of Socceroos were at training on Tuesday ahead of the Asian Cup with some new faces dropping by.

Under cloudy and rainy skies, the session on the excellent Collingwood training ground surface began with three groups of players.

Massimo Luongo, Jason Davidson and Nathan Burns had the lightest of sessions, with some stretching and very light jogging before going inside.

Tomi Juric, Matt Spiranovic, Matt McKay, Trent Sainsbury, Ivan Franjic also trained separately with light running and stretching before they too finished up early.

Mat Ryan joined the main group of keepers alongside Eugene Galekovic and Mitch Langerak as the trio began their work.

The main outfield group was James Troisi. Mark Bresciano, Alex Wilkinson, Tim Cahill, Tommy Oar, Mark Milligan, Mat Leckie, Robbie Kruse and Terry Antonis.

After the usual warm-up the main group began with the same passing drill as the previous two days with assistant coach Ante Milicic.

Short, sharp passing with the emphasis on pass-and-move and wall passes around markers within a rectangle area of around 20m in length.

20 minutes later and after a short break Aurelio Vidmar took over.

The Socceroo assistant brought Langerak and Galekovic into the main group for a small-sided game, with emphasis on quick first and second touches and intense pressing.

The keepers played only with their feet. “Better passes, make them chase,” yelled Vidmar.

It was the most intense drill so far in camp with it lasting around 20 minutes.

After the warm down Ryan stayed on the pitch to work with keeper coach Tony Franken.

Due in tonight in camp is Aziz Behich with Mile Jedinak and Chris Herd tomorrow to complete the 23.

Four Socceroos were also due to appear at Rebel Sport in Bourke St, City this afternoon for an autograph session around 3pm.
