Socceroos training session: day 2 report

The Socceroos upped the intensity for their second training session in Melbourne ahead of the Asian Cup as more players arrive in camp.

In much cooler conditions than yesterday, the same group of players trained on Collingwood AFL team’s training pitch.

The Socceroos who trained today were: Ivan Franjic, Mark Bresciano, Alex Wilkinson, Tim Cahill, Mitch Langerak, Eugene Galekovic, Tommy Oar, Mark Milligan, Mat Leckie, Robbie Kruse and Terry Antonis.

The addition was Brisbane Roar FC skipper Matt McKay who walked laps with a trainer before going inside.

Other players to have arrived but not at training were James Troisi and Mat Ryan.

However the hardest working player at training today was Trent Sainsbury. As he did yesterday, the defender worked separately from the group but his workload was upped significantly.

He finished his session with his hands on his knees after a thoroughly testing session of sprints and ball work.

The main group took part in the usual warm up before the two keepers Galekovic and Langerak moved away to do their own work.

The main group began with a passing drill that was more intense than yesterday’s gentle first session in the heat.

“Keep the ball moving, keep your body moving,” was assistant coach Ante Milicic's instructions as Ange Postecoglou watched on.

After around 20 minutes Milicic progressed the session to include yesterday’s structured passing drill.

It featured players moving and passing between markers in a roughly 30m area, the aim being to pass continuously at high intensity and in a coordinated way.

Clearly Milicic’s favourite word is “bravo” as he used it often during the drill.

After less than an hour the session was over and the players went inside to warm down.
