Socceroos to play World Cup qualifier in Perth

The Socceroos will play Bangladesh at nib Stadium in Perth on Thursday 3 September in a 2018 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualification match, the first game on Australian soil since claiming the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.

Tickets will go on sale to the Football Family at 9am (AWT) this morning (Wednesday) before the general public can purchase tickets to watch the first Socceroos match in Perth for 10 years from 12pm (AWT) on Thursday (April 16).

“It is exciting for the Socceroos to be heading back to Perth after 10 years,” said Socceroos Head Coach Ange Postecoglou. “The Socceroos are Australia’s football team and it is important we give all fans the opportunity to watch the team as we strive to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

“The match against Bangladesh at nib Stadium will be the first time the Socceroos have played a match in Australia since winning the Asian Cup and it will be a special occasion.

“The Socceroos play matches all over the world in tough conditions but nothing beats looking around and seeing a sea of gold with the support of our fellow Aussies.”

Western Australia’s Deputy Premier and Tourism Minister Kim Hames said securing the match against Bangladesh was a great coup for WA.

“People from around Australia and the world will be keen to visit Perth for the match, or watch the game played on live broadcasts from WA across the globe,” Minister Hames said.

“To see the Asian Cup champions in their first home-soil qualifier is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and the State Government is proud to support it.”

Football West Chairman Liam Twigger urged the Western Australian football public to throw their support behind the match. “This is a wonderful opportunity for all Western Australian sports fans to show their support for our Asian Cup winning Socceroos,” he said.

“Through their recent achievements, the Socceroos have captured the hearts of all Australians and we look forward to welcoming them to Perth.

“It has been more than 10 years since the Australian national team played in WA and I would encourage everyone to purchase their tickets early to ensure they don’t miss out on being part of this historic occasion.”

The Socceroos v Bangladesh match will be broadcast LIVE on Fox Sports 4 (Channel 505) and on a one-hour delay on SBS.
