Alex Wilkinson will play on for a fifth season with Sydney FC after signing a one-year contract extension with the Hyundai A-League champions on Thursday.
The Sky Blues skipper, who will turn 36 before the start of next season, has been an integral part of the club’s success since moving to the Harbour City in 2016.
Wilkinson, who has played 16 times for the Caltex Socceroos, has won two Championships, two Premierships and an FFA Cup title with the Sky Blues.
He has featured in 111 games for the club in all competitions and is on track to be in the top 10 appearances makers for Sydney FC with this new contract.
“I’m thrilled to be re-signing with a club that has given me so much over the last four years,” Wilkinson told Sydney FC’s official website.
“I’ve enjoyed some of my best football at Sydney FC and I’m eager for that to continue along with all the success we’ve had.
“This squad is a pleasure to captain and it’s always an honour to pull on the Sky Blue shirt and represent my home city.”
With fellow central defender Ryan McGowan also locked-in for the 2020/21 Season, the Sky Blues have a strong base to remain at the forefront of the Hyundai A-League.
“To have our central defensive pairing locked in for season 2020/21 is a massive win and a real positive for the club,” coach Steve Corica said.
“Alex has been an exceptional leader and his experience has proven invaluable across all levels at Sydney FC.
“I’m looking forward to having Alex as a part of our squad again next season and congratulate him on his efforts to date.”
Wilkinson will again lad Sydney FC into battle on Sunday when they have the chance to go to the top of the table with a clash against competition newcomers Western United FC.
