Signing news: Sydney FC skipper commits to another season

Sydney FC captain Alex Brosque used the club’s Sky Blue Ball on Saturday night to confirm he’ll play one for another season in the Hyundai A-League.

It was though Brosque would call time on his career after the 2017/18 Season but he’s decided to continue his glittering 17-year career.

It’s a major boost for the Sky Blues considering they have already seen coach Graham Arnold leave to become the new Caltex Socceroos boss, while defenders Jordy Buijs and Luke Wilkshire – and striker Matt Simon - have also departed.

"I'm Sydney FC, through and through," Brosque said at Sydney's end-of-season awards night.

"It's been a joy to captain this club through the most successful period in their history and I'm glad I'm here to stay.

"I'm really excited with the direction we're heading at the moment, Steve Corica as head coach is a fantastic appointment and I know all the players, like me, are eager to play under him and impress."

Brosque has overseen an amazing spell of success over the last couple of seasons, that has included a Premiership-Championships double in 2016/17, an FFA Cup and another Premiers’ Plate last season.

He is currently the all-time highest capped player for the club with 218 appearances, and the club’s leading all-time leading goalscorer with 64 goals.

The 34-year-old’s decision to play on is a great boost to new boss Steve Corica, who is trying to keep the majority of Sydney’s star-studded squad together for another title tilt in 2018/19.

“Brosquey is at the heart and soul of everything we do and to be able to retain him is crucial moving forward,” Corica said.

“To have him at the club on this journey in 2018/19 is a massive boost and I can’t wait to get started.”

The Sky Blues are also hopeful of announcing the re-signing of Serbian playmaker Milos Ninkovic on a new two-year deal in coming days.
