Signing news: Macarthur FC bring in midfielder from Danish champions

Less than 10 weeks out from their historic first A-League match, Macarthur FC have added a 14th signing in Australian-Cypriot midfielder Antonis Martis.

The 20-year-old is the latest addition to Ante Milicic’s foundation squad, joining on a season-long loan from the club that former Adelaide United star Awer Mabil led to the Danish Superliga championship last season, FC Midtjylland.

A Cyprus under-19 international and former Australia under-16 starlet, Martis progressed through the FC Midtjylland youth ranks in Denmark and is set to make his senior debut with the newly-formed Bulls in their inaugural A-League campaign.

Martis, who primarily operates in central midfield, spent pre-season with Mabil and the Wolves’ first-team squad and his new coach Milicic is excited about seeing the budding prospect test himself in the A-League.

“He is a good young player – an aggressive ball winner with European experience,” Milicic said in a club statement.

“Having played in the [UEFA Youth] League against many different styles, I am looking forward to seeing him continue to reach his full potential in the A-League.”

Martis was raised in Sydney’s south-west and the prospect of returning to play such a significant role for his newly-established hometown team is one he could not refuse.

“Being based overseas I don’t get the opportunity to play in front of my family and friends too often,” Martis added.

“I am very excited to be back home playing with Macarthur FC in the inaugural season. I can’t wait to to play at Campbelltown Stadium in front of my family and friends.”

Martis will add his youthful exuberance to a midfield ranks containing the wisdom of French veteran Loïc Puyo and ex-Socceroos Mark Milligan and Tommy Oar.

Milicic can also call upon Olyroos playmaker Denis Genreau and Young Socceroo Jake Hollman in the centre of the field, in what is becoming a position of depth for the competition newcomers.

Macarthur FC play their inaugural pre-season friendly against Camden Tigers at the sold-out Ron Dine Memorial Reserve on Sunday, 25 October at 4pm.
