Signing news: Neville latest addition to Fowler’s new-look Roar squad

Brisbane Roar’s defence will have almost a completely new look in the Hyundai A-League 2019/20 Season after the club secured Premiership-winning right-back Scott Neville.

Neville was released by Glory last week and will play his 12th season of Hyundai A-League football with Robbie Fowler’s Roar.

After Roar conceded a league-record 71 goals last season, it’s no surprise Neville is the third defensive recruit in a week after the additions of Scotsman Tom Aldred and young Englishman Macaulay Gillesphey.

“It’s a great opportunity for me and I’m excited to get started.”

“I played with [Head Coach] Robbie [Fowler] at Perth so it’s exciting to work under him,” Neville said.

“He was the ultimate professional as a player and I’m sure he will be as Head Coach as well.

“The Roar is a massive Club and throughout my time in the [Hyundai] A-League, coming to Suncorp Stadium has always been a tough battle.

“If we can turn our home ground in to a fortress, and work together as a team, it will go a long way to bringing success back to the Club.”

A new challenge

Now 30, Neville is looking to nail down a regular starting spot in the Hyundai A-League after backing up ex-Caltex Socceroos defender Ivan Franjic at Glory last season.

While Neville made 22 appearances for Tony Popovic’s troops, only seven of those were from the start.

He did come off the bench to score a crucial goal in the epic Semi Final win over Adelaide United which booked Glory’s first Grand Final appearance in seven years.

As well as making 104 appearances for Glory over two stints, Neville has also featured for Newcastle Jets and Western Sydney Wanderers in the Hyundai A-League.

Neville is Fowler’s tenth signing of the off-season, joining the likes of Irishman Roy O’Donovan and Welsh striker Aaron Amadi-Holloway.
