Signing news: Former Bundesliga star Meier joins Western Sydney

Western Sydney Wanderers have swooped for a former star of the Bundesliga, Alexander Meier.

The 36-year-old German striker has signed for Markus Babbel's side for the upcoming Hyundai A-League 2019/20 Season.

Meier scored 119 Bundesliga goals in a decorated career spanning 14 years with Eintracht Frankfurt and spent last season with St. Pauli in the German second tier.

He is colloquially known as Fussballgott (Football God) in his homeland.

“I’m very excited to play in Australia and I can’t wait to go on the plane tonight,” Meier told the club website.

“Markus told me how professional the club is and that they are very ambitious, and it is a great club to play for.

“I don’t like to speak about myself, about what I can deliver, all I can say that is I will always give 100% on-and-off the field.

“The most important thing for me is that as a team we all stand for each other, in bad and in good times, and the better the environment we create, success can come from this.”

A German Cup winner and 2014/15 Bundesliga top scorer, Meier spent five seasons playing with Wanderers midfielder Pirmin Schwegler between 2009-14.

He will arrive in Western Sydney on Sunday morning.
