Signing news: Brown makes Brisbane return

Corey Brown has returned home to the Brisbane Roar after being released by Melbourne Victory.

The River City-native made three starts and three substitute appearances for Victory in 2019/20 and was let go following the appointment of Carlos Salvachua as head coach on Thursday.

The 26-year-old started 21 of his 23 appearances during head coach Kevin Muscat’s final season in charge of the Navy Blue in 2018/19 but lost his starting left-back spot to Adam Traore.

Brown turned out 88 times in the Hyundai A-League for the Queenslanders during a six-season spell between 2013 and 2018, and played 15 times in their Premiership-Championship double-winning season in 2013/14.

Roar head coach Robbie Fowler has operated with Jack Hingert at left wing-back in recent weeks, although the versatile Brown can fill a number of roles across defence and midfield.

Brown was awarded the Gary Wilkins Medal for being Roar’s player of the season in 2016/17 and the local boy could not hide his excitement about his homecoming.

“I love this city, I’m happy to be back at the club – the club that I grew up with,” Brown told the club website.

“I’m really looking forward to earning my spot and winning with this team.

“I do have a point to prove. The reason I’m back at this club is to earn game time and win for this team, the members and fans & importantly, the club.

“The club has come a long way in the last couple of years. I have seen so much improvement throughout the club and I’m looking forward to getting back out in front of the fans and giving back to them for their support.”
