Signing news: Victory boost defence with Hoogland and Donachie

Defensive reinforcements are on the way for Melbourne Victory in the form of Tim Hoogland and James Donachie.

The two centre backs have joined on one year contracts and provide Marco Kurz with sorely required depth in the heart of defence.

Hoogland, 34,  joins from German side VfL Bochum and will reunite with Caltex Socceroo attacker Robbie Kruse, whom he played alongside at the the 2. Bundesliga outfit.

A former German youth international who made his professional debut in the Bundesliga for Schalke in 2005, Hoogland has also featured for the likes of Mainz and Fulham.

“I’m excited to join Melbourne Victory and by the new challenge that awaits me in Australia,” said Hoogland.

“I’ve heard great things about the club and about the A-League, and with Robbie and Marco there too, I will definitely feel at home.

“I can’t wait to meet my new teammates and start training.”

Meanwhile, Donachie - a Championship winner with the Victorians in 2017/18 - is returning to Melbourne after his loan stint with K-League club Jeonnam Dragons.

“After remaining in touch with the club during the off-season, I was impressed with the changes being made and also by the opportunity to step up further personally,” said Donachie.

“The squad is starting to take shape, and we still have more new players to sign before the season begins in a couple of months, so it’s an exciting position to be in.”
