Brisbane Roar kicked off their Foxtel Y-League Championship defence with a crushing 7-0 win against Melbourne Victory.
Astonishingly, Sydney FC managed to top the Queenslanders for goals in an 11-goal thriller against Newcastle Jets.

Muratovic at the treble for Champions
Brisbane Roar brushed aside the challenge of Melbourne Victory with Mirza Muratovic hitting a three in a 7-0 triumph.
Goals from Jai Tipaldo, a Muratovic penalty and Aaron Reardon got the hosts off a flyer as they went into the break at Eric Evans Oval 3-0 to the good.
The floodgates opened further when the clock hit 70 minutes, with Eli Adams making it four before Muratovic scored twice in four minutes.
After Matthew Bozinovski was shown an 89th-minute red card, Keegan Jelacic put the exclamation point on the victory in stoppage time.
Sydney FC are best of 11
Marco Tilio netted a 10-minute hat-trick as Sydney FC lit up Leichhardt Oval in a stunning 8-3 win against Newcastle Jets.
In a breathless opening, Jordi Swibel put the Sky Blues ahead before own goals from Tom Beecham and Kieran Hayes extended the hosts’ advantage.
Joe Langlois hit back before Jake Hollman made it 4-1 to Sydney, but the Jets fought back to 4-3 at half-time through Sam Donnellan’s double.
The Sky Blues accelerated away in the second half when Tilio scored on 67 minutes, Ryan Teague notched on 73 minutes and Young Socceroos striker Tilio netted two more in the next four minutes.
Armiento at the double
Adelaide United came away from a road trip to Perth Glory with a convincing 3-0 victory.
Carlo Armiento got the Reds off to a fast start with a fifth-minute strike but it wasn’t until 53 minutes when the visitors raced ahead at Dorrien Gardens.
Zayd Farah’s 53rd-minute own goal doubled the away team’s lead and Armiento put the seal on the points in the 77th minute.
Mariners get off to winning start
Central Coast Mariners clinched a 3-1 triumph against Canberra United at McKellar Park.
Michael Katsoulis put the away side in the ascendancy on 10 minutes but Jordan Host levelled up the scores on 43 minutes.
Parity lasted only a minute when Harry McCarthy put the Mariners up at half-time, and Kyle Johnson wrapped up the results in second-half stoppage time.
