Ryan opens up on clean sheet run

Caltex Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan is feeling full of confidence as he aims to set a Brighton and Hove Albion club record on Sunday morning (AEDT).

Ryan is hoping to be the first Brighton goalkeeper to keep four successive clean sheets in England’s top flight, after an outstanding month of form from the shot-stopper helped his side climb up to 11th in the table.

The Seagulls face a tricky trip to Everton on Sunday and face a side who have scored in their last five meetings in all competitions.

But Ryan says spirits are high and that Brighton have learned plenty from last season.

“We’re in a good place,” he told The Argus.

“We have learnt from last season, we know what level we need to hold to be successful in games.

“We’re in that little patch at the moment and we need to continue that.”

And while Ryan kept five clean sheets in a row during his time at Club Brugge in Belgium, he says four on the trot in the Premier League would surpass that in terms of personal achievements.

“It’s always a nice feeling [to keep a clean sheet] but in England it’s another level again,” he said.

“We’ve done our fair share of suffering in recent games. Our defensive structure is paramount to our success.

“We know going into games we are going to have to defend really well to keep a clean sheet and the club prides itself on that since the gaffer [Chris Hughton] has taken the helm.

“That was a big key to getting up to the Premier League.”

Victory at Goodison Park could lift Brighton as high as eighth if other results go their way.
