Ryan Edwards loan deal in doubt

Perth Glory has approached English Championship club Reading to end the loan deal that brought Ryan Edwards to Perth, but at this point the Olyroos midfielder wants to stay with the Glory.

Perth Glory CEO Jason Brewer acknowledged that initial discussions had taken place with Reading, but said any potential movement was far from being decided.

“We-re very happy with Ryan-s performance, he-s done very well for us and that was reflected in his selection for Oman,” said Brewer.

“We did make a preliminary enquiry based on our team makeup and transfers. It was very early stages of seeing when they would take him back.

“It was more to gauge Reading-s long term vision and to make decisions about our team makeup.

“Our coaches looked at the team and given Ryan is on loan made a decision based on whether or not he would still be here in the future.”

“Based on a response from Reading, we are happy to have Ryan here for the rest of the season and as a member of the first team squad.”

Edwards has just returned home from representing Australia at the Asian Under-22 Championships. It was while in Oman he received a phone call from Reading telling him they were in a receipt of an email from Glory Football Operations General Manager Ante Kovacevic asking that the season-long loan deal be cancelled during the January transfer window.

It's understood Edwards was unaware of Glory's intentions, and has since made it clear he prefers to see out the season at his hometown club rather than return to England, where his chances of a first-team breakthough with the Royals remain unlikely.
