Rewind: Last time the Westfield Matildas played in Brisbane

Ahead of the Cup of Nations next year we are taking a look back at some historic Westfield Matildas occasions.

On 3 March Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium will play host to the Westfield Matildas’ match-up against Korea Republic in the second round of fixtures for the four-team tournament.

The match will take place almost five years to the date the Westfield Matildas last played in the River City.

Back in 2014 Brazil were the opponents and the QSAC Centre was the venue as the Westfield Matildas took on the visitors in the final match of a two-game series.

After going down to Brazil 1-0 in the first game the Westfield Matildas were on the front foot from the start with Brazilian goalkeeper Thais Picarte called into action to deny Tameka Butt and Lisa De Vanna.

The home side’s forward line kept pestering the Brazilians until finally they took a deserved lead, Kate Gill emphatically heading home from an Elise Kellond-Knight corner.

The visitors stepped up their game in the second half and eight minutes after the re-start they had drawn level through Tamires Gomes.

The left-back was played in by Moraildes Mota and seeing Australian goalkeeper Brianna Davey rush towards her chipped the shot-stopper from close range.

The match looked to be heading for a draw until substitute Michelle Heyman popped up in the 81st minute.

After being played through, Heyman skilfully rounded the Brazilian goalkeeper and slid the ball into an empty net to give the Westfield Matildas an encouraging and deserved victory.
