Report: Jets triumph in free-flowing affair

Newcastle Jets have claimed a second successive victory as they defeated Western Sydney Wanderers 1-0 at Marconi Stadium on Saturday night.

A goal to Jenna Kingsley on the hour mark was enough to see off a Wanderers side that continued their winless start to the Westfield W-League season.

REACTION: Mature Jets flying high

The match, as part of rebel Female Football Round, was an entertaining affair and probably should have ended with multiple scorers for both sides if not for some desperate defending.

The match immediately sprang to life and it was the visitors who almost took the lead after only four minutes, Katie Stengel being flagged offside just before she buried the ball into the back of the net.

Though the finishing left a lot to be desired, both sides were willing to attack, launching raid after raid on opposing goals in an end-to-end first half.

The home side managed a few half-chances but it was the Jets who went closest to breaking the deadlock with Emily Van Egmond and Stengel looking threatening in particular.

Just before the break Wanderers goalkeeper Jada Whyman was called into action, Cortnee Vine’s long-range effort tipped over the bar by a back-tracking Whyman.

Stengel was again the centre of attention as she found herself through goal eight minutes after the re-start but her shot was blocked by a desperate Kylie Ledbrook.

With the chances piling up it was perhaps inevitable that the Jets would eventually put the ball into the back of the net

It arrived just on the hour-mark as a poor clearance from Whyman picked out Stengel, who’s shot deflected into the path of Jenna Kingsley.

The 26-year old made no mistake as she slid the ball past Whyman to bring up her first goal of the season.

Once ahead Newcastle rarely looked like relinquishing their lead with a calm defensive display, earning them their second win in three Westfield W-League matches.
