Re-live the Magic of the Cup: rampant Reds stun Victory

The two traditional Hyundai A-League rivals dished up a cracking Westfield FFA Cup clash in the Round of 16, in a match that summed up that old football adage, “a game of two halves”.

A 3,000 strong crowd packed in to Marden Sports Complex hopeful of a Reds win but saw the visitors dominate the opening 45 minutes.

Victory’s attack of Besart Berisha, Mitch Austin and James Troisi caused all sorts of problems for Adelaide but were just unable to find a breakthrough.

It would prove costly for Kevin Muscat’s side.

Eight minutes after the break the Reds took the initiative, with Johan Absalonsen producing a bullet finish from 25 metres out into the right corner of the net.

Marco Kurz’s men doubled their lead in the 66th minute, with youngster George Blackwood converting a penalty after Rhys Williams blocked Absalonsen’s shot with his arm.

The Reds were then in dreamland late on as young midfielder Nathan Konstandopoulous sealed the win with another long-range stunner.

In a match that had a bit of everything – including seven yellow cards – the Reds got the better of their traditional rivals to ensure Victory missed the last eight of the competition for the very first time.
