Phoenix blow as injury ends Fenton’s Hyundai A-League season

Luckless Wellington Phoenix defender Louis Fenton has been ruled out for the rest of the Hyundai A-League season with a shoulder injury.

The 26-year-old underwent shoulder surgery last week, with his recovery period meaning he will not play again in the 2019/20 campaign.

Fenton has not played since suffering a recurrence of the shoulder injury in the defeat to Melbourne City in Round 4.

“It’s something that needed to get done,” Talay said on Phoenix’s official website.

"He'll miss the season, which is a big blow for us, but the main thing is we get him right, he gets his body right and he's ready for pre-season next year."

Fenton has battled a multitude of injuries in recent seasons, previously dislocating both shoulders and breaking his leg and foot.

The club are hopeful the surgery to repair his shoulder will prevent further issues.

It is understood the club are planning to make an injury replacement signing to cover Fenton once the transfer window opens in January.

After losing their first four matches of the season, Wellington have jumped up to fifth spot on the ladder on the back of three straight wins.

Wellington Phoenix travel to AAMI Park next Saturday to do battle with Melbourne Victory in Round 10. The match on Saturday, 14 December kicks off at 5pm AEDT.
