‘One of the best keepers Australia has produced’: High praise for Federici as Macarthur make dream start

Among the high-quality imports, veteran Socceroos and exciting young talent, the acquisition of experienced goalkeeper Adam Federici perhaps didn’t receive as much fanfare as other signings to new A-League outfit Macarthur FC.

But the 35-year-old showed just how important he’ll be to the Bulls’ chances in their inaugural season with a stunning display against Western Sydney Wanderers on Wednesday night.

Federici was relatively quiet for the first 43 minutes at Bankwest Stadium but was instrumental in his side’s historic 1-0 win at Bankwest Stadium.

The ex-Premier League gloveman made four vital – and world-class - saves either side of the break to ensure the Bulls made a winning start to life in the A-League.

“I haven’t spoken about too much Federici coming in but he’s by far one of the best goalkeepers Australia has ever produced,” said Bulls skipper Mark Milligan to Fox Sports.

“The public is very lucky to have him back here.

“Around the changeroom I have a very good group and it’s because of players like Fedders.

“He takes the changeroom by the scruff of the next and sets a magnificent environment and then you see what he does between the sticks for us.”

Federici’s memorable display started just before half-time when he tipped a scorching Simon Cox strike over the bar, before following it up with impressive stops to deny James Troisi and Kwame Yeboah.

But the best save of the lot was a full-stretch dive to keep out Keanu Naccus’ thumping effort when the match was still in the balance.

“I expect myself to save that nine times out of 10 hopefully,” a modest Federici said.

“I’m just glad we came away with a clean sheet. The team defended really well.

“It was a great performance all around and it’s great to start the season with three points.”

Federici’s heroics weren’t the only bright spot for the A-League newcomers.

Young gun Lachlan Rose caught the eye in his professional debut, while Milligan, Matt Derbyshire, Loic Puyo, James Meredith and Aleksandar Jovanovic lead from the front.

“These players set a standard. I’m so fortunate with the players I have in the dressing room,” coach Ante Milicic said.

“They come in day in, day out…and show everyone what it is to be a professional. They approach every training session, every single drill, every game, every video session…it’s real quality.

“All the players are hungry. But it’s just the first game, we can’t get carried away.”

Milligan added on the result: “It’s absolutely fantastic. It’s been a long time coming.

“It’s a brand new team and to be totally honest you don’t really know what’s going to happen when you come into the season.

“We’re at the Wanderers home ground, which is a fortress for them. To get the three points is outstanding for us and a great start for the club.”
