NPL wrap: Costly loss for Tigers FC, Campbelltown clinch back-to-back titles

Canberra Olympic have leapfrogged Tigers FC to go to the top of the ladder in the nation’s capital after a dramatic weekend of action.

Olympic crushed Riverina Rhinos 5-1 on Saturday with goals from Stephen Domenici (two), Kofi Danning, Nik Popovic and Jay Kelly.

Tigers FC had the chance to go back to the summit 24 hours later but were beaten 3-0 by Gungahlin United.

It means Olympic have a two-point lead over Tigers FC, with the two club’s to meet in a title-deciding final round blockbuster this weekend.

Elsewhere, Tuggeranong United overcame Woden-Weston 2-0 and Belconnen United outclassed Monaro Panthers 4-1.

South Australia

Campbelltown City have wrapped up the premiership for a second consecutive season despite slumping to a comprehensive 4-1 loss against Adelaide Comets.

With second-place Raiders FC drawing 1-1 with Croydon Kings, Campbelltown hold a four-point lead at the top heading into next weekend’s final round.

Nathan Andijanto scored a brace for the Comets who moved into third place with the big upset of the league-leaders.

In other results, Adelaide Olympic were held to a 1-1 draw by West Adelaide and MetroStars kept their finals hopes alive with a 4-2 win over Adelaide City.

New South Wales

Sydney United 58 clinched the last spot in the Finals Series after a 3-1 final round win over Manly United.

In a three-way tussle for the last spot in the top five, United did the business at home with Matthew Bilic, Peter Simonoski and Patrick Antelmi scoring the goals.

The victory saw United jump up to fourth, ahead of Marconi Stallions who they will now face in this weekend’s Elimination Final.

The Stallions, who were already assured of a finals berth heading into the last round, lost 1-0 against premiers Wollongong Wolves.

In other results, APIA Leichhardt lost 2-1 to Mount Druitt Town Rangers and Sutherland Sharks walloped Rockdale City Suns 5-2.

Western Australia

Perth SC are now just one win away from retaining their NPL WA title after they bounced back from last week's defeat to Floreat Athena with a comfortable victory over Balcatta.

It took 42 minutes for the Azzurri to take the lead via Harley Orr’s penalty, before further goals by Matt Milenkovic and Paul Zimarino after the break iced the result.

Second-place Floreat threw away a 3-0 lead to share the points with Sorrento in a six-goal thriller at Percy Doyle Reserve, to fall seven points adrift of Perth SC with three rounds to go.

Elsewhere, Armadale put five goals past Cockburn City (5-1), Stirling Lions upset Bayswater City 2-1 and ECU Joondalup and Inglewood United drew 1-1.

Queensland

Lions FC have moved a step closer to the premiership after a hard-fought win over Western Pride on Saturday night.

The score was just 1-0 for long periods until the fifth-minute of stoppage-time when Chris Hatfield made the result safe.

Gold Coast Knights moved into second spot with a 3-0 win over Brisbane Strikers, while Peninsula Power got back into the winner’s circle with a 3-0 victory at Sunshine Coast FC.

Tasmania

Devonport inched closer to back-to-back titles in the Apple Isle after a gritty 3-1 win over a brave Glenorchy Knights on Saturday.

The Strikers didn’t have things all their own way but eventually wore down the visitors, with Daniel Syson, Eddie Bidwell and Toby Barton on the scoresheet.

Despite falling behind early, Olympia Warriors cruised to a 7-1 win over Clarence with Jack Ryan (three goals), Joffrey Nkoso (two) the main destroyers.

Elsewhere, South Hobart came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Launceston City and Riverside Olympic and Kingborough ended 1-1.
