NPL review: History for Maitland, Lions go back to back, three in a row for Heidelberg

Premierships were dished out in Northern NSW, Queensland and Victoria on the weekend.

Historic day for Maitland

Maitland FC secured their first-ever Northern NSW Premiership with a 3-2 win over Newcastle Jets.

The club from the coalfields have defied all odds in a completely thrilling NPL NSW season which is just the club’s fifth campaign back in the top flight after spending 12 years in the second tier.

They’ll face Broadmeadow Magic in the first two-legged semi-finals after they secured a finals position with a 1-0 win over Charlestown. Lambton Jaffas and Edgeworth Eagles will contest the other semi-final.

Lions roar in Queensland

Lions FC completed back-to-back Premierships after defeating Redlands United 2-0.

A goal in each half from Henry Hore sealed consecutive NPL Queensland Premierships for the Brisbane club, with one round to spare.

The weekend also saw Brisbane Strikers rack up an 11-0 victory over Magpies Crusaders ahead of Wednesday’s FFA Cup clash with Manly United, while Peninsula Power hammered Gold Coast United 6-1.

Heidelberg secure a hat-trick

From Maitland’s inaugural triumph to consecutive titles for Lions FC to a threepeat of Premierships for Heidelberg United of Victoria.

The Bergers sealed their third Premiers Plate in a row with a 3-0 win over South Melbourne on the weekend, trumping Avondale – who beat Bentleigh Greens 3-0 - to top honours.

Oakleigh Cannons, meanwhile, secured a home final thanks to a 3-0 win over Green Gully.

New South Wales

Sydney United 58 booked a Grand Final ticket against APIA Leichhardt Tigers following a dramatic 2-1 win over NPL NSW Premiers Wollongong.

The Reds are also set to take on Western Sydney Wanderers in the FFA Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday, before heading to Bankwest Stadium to face APIA in the big dance – their fifth match in 14 days.

South Australia

Adelaide Comets will take a 1-0 lead to Campbelltown City this weekend after defeating the Premiership winners at home.

Meanwhile, Adelaide Olympic and MetroStars will face off in the Elimination Final.

Olympic beat Adelaide Blue Eagles 2-0, while MetroStars crushed Raiders 4-0.

Tasmania

In Tasmania, South Hobart and Olympia Warriors warmed up for the finals series with 3-0 wins over Riverside Olympic and Kingborough Lions respectively.

Devonport Strikers wrapped up the Premiership last Wednesday – their third title in four seasons.

Western Australia

Perth SC are not back-to-back Premiers by mere circumstances, and they proved that again in a 4-3 win over Cockburn City.

The 2019 Premiers came from behind to notch a thrilling win, while Inglewood United booked their finals ticket with a 3-1 win at Rockingham City.
