NPL NSW Round 21 Review

Round 21 of the National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s competition provided plenty of entertainment and set up football fans for an exciting final round of the season.

Mt Druitt Town Rangers FC 2 – Sydney Olympic FC 3 at Popondetta Park
Sydney Olympic FC remain in the hunt for the Premiership after their 3-2 win against Mt Druitt Town Rangers at Popondetta Park on Friday night.

Ace marksman Roy O’Donovan fired home a brace either side of half time to push his tally to 19 for the season, alongside a goal to Sam McIllhatton to secure three points.

For Mt Druitt Town Rangers, they suffered a battling loss in what has been a tough campaign. The hosts pulled one back in the second half through substitute Mabior Garang and then a late screamer from Jack Stewart for some consolation.

Sutherland Sharks FC 2 – Northbridge Bulls 2 at Seymour Shaw
Sutherland Sharks’ last home match for the 2022 NPL NSW Men’s season saw them share points in a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Northbridge Bulls at Seymour Shaw Park on Saturday evening.

Goals from Jesper Webber and Diego Bonilla for the visitors in the opening 15 minutes saw them get ahead early, but second-half goals to Lachlan MacDonald and substitute Mitch Smith cancelled out the two-goal deficit to earn a point for the home side.

Sydney United 58 FC 2 – Manly United FC 4 at Sydney United Sports Centre
Manly United have kept their Premiership hopes alive for another week after a dominant first half helped secure a 4-2 win over Sydney United 58 at Sydney United Sports Centre on Sunday afternoon.

Two goals in the opening ten minutes from Finn Ashton and Kristian Santich set up Manly for a dominant opening half, before Bruno Mendes extended the lead to three on the brink of half time.

United 58 came alive in the second half and opened the scoring through Jordan Roberts, shortly before Manly answered back through their captain James Oates.

The hosts secured a consolation in the final when Patrick Antelmi converted from the penalty spot, but it was Manly’s day as they picked up three crucial points in the race for first.

Blacktown City FC 4 – Wollongong Wolves FC 1 at Blacktown City Sports Centre
It was all business for Blacktown City FC who reclaimed top spot on Sunday afternoon after a 4-1 win over Wollongong Wolves FC at Blacktown City Sports Centre.

With the race for the Premiership resting in the balance, the equation was simple for  Blacktown City as they hosted Wollongong Wolves – win and you’ll return to the top of the ladder with one game remaining in the regular season.

Rockdale Ilinden FC 2 – Sydney FC 1 at Rockdale Ilinden Sports Centre
A pulsating grandstand finish saw Rockdale Ilinden secure a valuable three points with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Sydney FC at Rockdale Ilinden Sports Centre on Sunday evening.

Alec Urosevski opened the scoring for Rockdale, but Sydney FC hit back through Nathan Grimaldi before substitute Jamie Percevski powered home a header to lock up the win.

Experienced defender Mitchell Stamatellis was missing for the home side due to a niggling hamstring injury and both talisman ‘Special K’ Jaiden Kucharski and Adrian Segecic were out for Sydney FC.

APIA Leichhardt 2 – Marconi Stallions FC 2 at Lambert Park
APIA Leichhardt secured a 2-0 victory over a 10-man Marconi at Lambert Park on Sunday evening in the National Premier Leagues NSW Men’s ‘Italian Derby’.

The match up had everything you would expect of a historic rivalry, with plenty of fire, physicality and intensity from both ends of the park.

The opening goal of the match came just before the half-time break for the hosts through Yianni Nicolau, with a converted penalty from Jason Romero in the 62nd minute taking the hosts to two goals and the visitors to 10 men as Roberto Speranza was sent from the field with his second yellow.

The loss has made taking the Premiership title much harder for Marconi, but has put APIA Leichhardt in a strong position to qualify for finals football.
