Signing news: 'Phenomenal athlete' Jackson has huge future at Newcastle, says Ernie Merrick

Lachlan Jackson has a huge future in the game according to Ernie Merrick, with the young defender today inking a two-year contract extension with Newcastle Jets.

Sunshine Coast product Jackson, 23, has accumulated over 50 appearances with the Jets since moving from Brisbane Roar in 2015.

Merrick hailed Jackson as a 'phenomenal athlete' and said he was delighted to see the centre back sign on until the end of the Hyundai A-League 2020/2021 campaign.

“Lachlan is a great physical presence and is one of the fastest players in the club, he’s a phenomenal athlete,” Merrick told the club's official website.

“He’s continuing to mature as a player and Lachlan has put in some excellent performances so far this season.

“With the work he continues to put in off the park there’s no doubt Lachlan has a big future in the game and we’re glad it’s here at Newcastle for the next two seasons.”

Having moved to the Hunter Valley three years ago in search of regular first-team minutes, Jackson - who is currently midway through an engineering degree - said he can't wait to continue his development at the Jets.

“I’ve loved my time in Newcastle,” Jackson told the club's official website.

“I’ve got the opportunity to work with two of the most experienced centre backs in the league in Nigel (Boogaard) and Nikolai (Topor-Stanley).

“It’s also been great working with Ernie and the coaching staff, who continue to support my development as a player.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunities the next few years can bring in Jets colours, the club is headed in an exciting direction and it’s nice to be a part of it.”
