New captain Hamill honoured to lead Western Sydney Wanderers

A humbled Brendan Hamill is relishing the chance to lead hometown club Western Sydney Wanderers after being appointed captain for the upcoming campaign.

The 25-year-old has inherited the armband on a permanent basis ahead of his fifth season with the club.

Hamill, who broke into the Hyundai A-League with Melbourne City in 2010, was part of the leadership group last term and is now targeting a charge back up the ladder.

"To lead the team is a massive honour but to do it in an environment where I was born and bred is huge for me, it's huge for my family and I'm excited," he said.

"We've got a huge challenge ahead but I'm looking forward to it. I've got great leaders around me and we really want to attack that title this year.

"This club is all about winning titles and chasing honours, so it's no different this year."

Wanderers boss Markus Babbel described the vocal Hamill as the perfect fit for the role, with the new skipper to take on added responsibility amid Mark Bridge's injury absence.

The veteran forward will miss up to six weeks after picking up a calf problem in the FFA Cup.

"It takes time because it was a bad injury. It was very unlucky for him," Babbel said of Bridge's setback.

"He's working with our physio for the next two weeks, then maybe he can start with the conditioning trainer."

"We need him, he's an experienced player and we have many young players in our squad."
